In the book Otogibōko , published in 1666, there’s a story called ‘If You Speak of Mysteries, the Mysterious Shall Appear,’ which documented the customs for storytelling rituals during that time.”

“…I wouldn’t mind being hugged, though, if it was by Professor Takatsuki.” Nanako interjected in a low voice. “Miss Katsuragi! You too?! Now’s not the time to say ‘As long as he’s attractive,’ don’t you think?”

the unexplained is made up of two things: phenomenon and interpretation
Now that he said it, this is true

it’s usually the human mind that turns specters into specters and gives birth to monsters.
Hngghh I love this kinda thing so much

Because it’s more frightening to let a phenomenon go unexplained. People fear situations they can’t put a cause to
So true, the fear of unknown is real

Giving an explanation to things like that, things we don’t really understand, so that people can have peace of mind, is one of the functions of religion. It’s the same with other phenomena.

We try to define the world through interpretation so that we can put it into terms we can understand. Even if what we come up with is a bit unrealistic, it’s better than having no explanation at all

Chapter 2 The Girl Who Spits Up Needles

Sanyutei Encho was a rakugo storyteller and author who was active from the end of the Edo period to the Meiji period. His representative works included “The Tale of the Peony Lantern” and “The True View at the Kasane Marsh.” Naoya read about him at the library after Takatsuki mentioned him, and his plays seemed pretty scary. People tended to think of rakugo as a comedic medium, but Encho’s specialties had been ghost stories and emotional plays about human nature.
